Fly a single straight line around the Earth at the equator and you'd cross rainforest, desert, savanna and open ocean β sometimes all within the same few hundred kilometres.

Biogeography is the study of how plant and animal life is distributed across the Earth's surface, and why β shaped above all by climate, but also by soil, altitude and geological history. The world's land surface groups into a handful of major biomes, each with its own characteristic climate, vegetation and fauna.
The equatorial/tropical rainforest biome (the Amazon, the Congo Basin, insular Southeast Asia) sees year-round heat and heavy rainfall, supporting dense, multi-layered forest canopy and the planet's single richest concentration of biodiversity. The tropical grassland (savanna) biome (East Africa, the Llanos and Campos of South America) alternates wet and dry seasons, producing tall grass dotted with scattered trees and supporting large grazing mammal populations. Hot deserts (the Sahara, the Arabian and Thar deserts, the Atacama) receive minimal rainfall and carry extreme diurnal temperature swings, supporting only sparse, drought-adapted xerophytic vegetation.
Mediterranean climates (the Mediterranean basin itself, California, central Chile, south-western Australia, South Africa's Cape region) combine wet, mild winters with dry, hot summers, favouring tough, evergreen sclerophyllous scrub. Temperate grasslands β the Prairies of North America, the Steppes of Eurasia, Argentina's Pampas, South Africa's Veld, Australia's Downs β carry a continental climate over some of the world's most fertile soils. Temperate deciduous forest (Western Europe, eastern North America, eastern Asia) experiences four distinct seasons, with broadleaf trees shedding their leaves each autumn. The taiga (coniferous/boreal forest) β stretching across Siberia and Canada β is the world's single largest biome by area, defined by long, severe winters and vast stands of evergreen conifers. Finally, the tundra, fringing the Arctic, sits over permanently frozen permafrost, supporting only low-growing vegetation across its brief summer growing season.

The world's plants sort into biomes β but its animal life sorts along an entirely different, sharper set of lines, and nowhere is that line sharper than a narrow strait barely 35 km wide in the Indonesian archipelago.

Where biomes (above) classify the world by vegetation and climate, the world's animal life is classified separately into zoogeographic (biogeographic) realms β a scheme the British zoologist Philip Sclater first proposed in 1858 based on bird distribution, which Alfred Russel Wallace extended to all animal life in his 1876 book The Geographical Distribution of Animals. Six realms remain the standard reference framework: the Palearctic (all of Eurasia north of the Himalayan foothills, plus North Africa β the largest realm by area), the Nearctic (North America), the Neotropical (Central and South America), the Ethiopian/Afrotropical (sub-Saharan Africa), the Oriental/Indomalayan (South and Southeast Asia south of the Himalayas), and the Australian/Australasian (Australia, New Guinea and the surrounding islands).
The sharpest of all these realm boundaries is Wallace's Line, named for the naturalist who first mapped it in 1859: it runs through the Lombok Strait (between Bali and Lombok) and the Makassar Strait (between Borneo and Sulawesi), then south of Mindanao into the Philippine Sea. West of the line, fauna is overwhelmingly Asian in origin (tigers, elephants, rhinoceroses); east of it, Australian-origin fauna predominates (marsupials, cockatoos) β a genuinely sharp divide despite these straits being narrow, because they are also deep-water channels that were never bridged by land even at the lowest Pleistocene ice-age sea levels, unlike the shallow Sunda Shelf immediately to their west, which repeatedly joined Sumatra, Java and Borneo to mainland Asia. The transition zone between the Oriental and Australian realms β Sulawesi, Lombok, Timor and the Moluccas β is called Wallacea, home to unique fauna found nowhere else on Earth, including Sulawesi's anoa (dwarf buffalo) and babirusa, and Komodo Island's Komodo dragon.
India itself straddles this same kind of boundary. Per the Rodgers & Panwar (1988) classification, developed by the Wildlife Institute of India and still the standard framework for India's own biogeography, the country is divided into 10 biogeographic zones and 27 provinces β but more fundamentally sits across two realms: the Trans-Himalayan and Himalayan zone in the north carries a genuinely Palearctic character, while the rest of the subcontinent belongs to the Oriental realm. The Himalaya-Hindu Kush-Karakoram mountain wall itself forms this actual biogeographic boundary β India's own, mountain-built version of the same strait-built barrier that Wallace's Line draws through the Malay Archipelago.
