Infrastructure and Economy: Bhogapuram Airport and the RBI Projections

Two economic items need exact numbers: the airport and the RBI projections.

Infrastructure and economy: Bhogapuram airport and the RBI projections

  • Bhogapuram airport (1 August). Prime Minister Modi inaugurated the Alluri Sitarama Raju International Airport at Bhogapuram in Vizianagaram district, Andhra Pradesh, built by GMR Visakhapatnam International Airport Limited under a public-private partnership. First-phase capacity is 6 million passengers a year, with later phases of 12 and 18 million. The cost is reported at about Rs 5,640 crore by most sources (another says about Rs 4,727 crore). The same day he laid the foundation stone of a semiconductor project at Visakhapatnam. Static: the airport is named after the freedom fighter Alluri Sitarama Raju, who led the Rampa Rebellion (1922-24).

  • RBI policy (5 August). At the 62nd meeting on 3-5 August the MPC kept the repo rate unchanged at 5.25 per cent with a neutral stance, unanimously; SDF 5.00 per cent, MSF and Bank Rate 5.50 per cent. Projections for 2026-27: real GDP growth 6.7 per cent and CPI inflation 5.0 per cent. CPI inflation rose to 4.4 per cent in June 2026, ending 16 months below target, on food and fuel prices; core inflation was 3.9 per cent. The next meeting was scheduled for 5-7 October 2026 (see the October note for what it decided). Static: the MPC meets at least four times a year; the target is 4 per cent, within a 2 to 6 per cent band.

Governance: the 80th Independence Day Address

The Independence Day speech is a rich source of 'announced in the news' questions.

Governance: the 80th Independence Day address

This was the Prime Minister's 80th Independence Day, his 13th consecutive address, of about 78 minutes (secondary reports).

  • Shakti Ki Sapt Dhara (seven streams of strength): manufacturing, agriculture and food processing, technology and innovation, Gati Shakti, Raksha Shakti, the green and blue economy and soft power.

  • Skills and youth: AI training for 1 crore youth over the next year and free online coaching for competitive examinations.

  • Industry: a target of at least 50 Indian companies in the Fortune 500; three semiconductor plants have started production, with five to eight more expected in seven to eight years.

  • Energy: 100 GW of nuclear capacity by 2047.

  • Sport: a nationwide talent hunt for children aged 5 to 15 and the aim of hosting the 2036 Olympic Games.

  • Security: he declared armed Naxalism eliminated.

  • The year also marks 150 years of Vande Mataram. Static: 'Vande Mataram' was composed by Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyay and appeared in the novel Anandamath (1882); the Constituent Assembly gave it equal status to the national anthem (24 January 1950).

International Relations: the Indus Waters Award and the SCO Summit

The month's legal and diplomatic items concern water and the SCO.

International relations: the Indus Waters award and the SCO summit

  • Court of Arbitration (31 August). The Court under the Indus Waters Treaty issued an award and a separate order on 31 August 2026, unanimously finding that none of India's stated reasons justified suspension or termination of the Treaty and that the Treaty remains fully in force, so India must meet its obligations, including for the Kishenganga and Ratle plants. It granted Pakistan interim measures limiting construction on the Ratle Hydro-Electric Plant until the Neutral Expert gives a final decision on the design, expected in July 2027. India rejected the Court as illegally constituted, said it would not appear before it and maintained that the Treaty is in abeyance (since April 2025, after the Pahalgam attack). An earlier award on maximum pondage was issued on 15 May 2026 and was also rejected. Static: the Treaty was signed on 19 September 1960 with World Bank involvement; India has the eastern rivers (Ravi, Beas, Sutlej) and Pakistan the western (Indus, Jhelum, Chenab), with limited run-of-river use for India; Ratle is on the Chenab and Kishenganga on the Kishanganga/Neelum.

  • SCO summit (31 August-1 September). Prime Minister Modi attended the 26th SCO Summit in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan, marking 25 years of the organisation. He met the presidents of Iran and Kyrgyzstan, Russia's President Putin and Armenia's Prime Minister Pashinyan, and greeted China's President Xi Jinping informally, the first encounter since the Tianjin summit of August 2025. The text of the Bishkek Declaration was not verified. Static: the SCO was founded in Shanghai in 2001 and has ten members (India, Pakistan, China, Russia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, Iran and Belarus); India joined in 2017.
