Primary Activities — The Four-Fold Economic Classification
Human activities that generate income are economic activities, grouped into four broad types: primary, secondary, tertiary and quaternary. Primary activities are those directly dependent on the environment — they utilise the earth's own resources of land, water, vegetation, building materials and minerals. This single umbrella covers hunting and gathering, pastoral activities, fishing, forestry, agriculture, and mining and quarrying — six genuinely distinct livelihoods unified only by direct resource extraction. People engaged in primary activities are known, evocatively, as red-collar workers, a term that captures the outdoor, exposed nature of the work as sharply as "white-collar" and "blue-collar" capture office and factory labour.
Hunting-Gathering & Pastoralism — The Oldest Economic Activities
Hunting-gathering is the oldest economic activity known to humanity — early humans subsisted on hunted animals and forest-gathered edible plants, using primitive stone, twig or arrow tools that kept kills limited. It survives today mainly in harsh-climate primitive societies, needs almost no capital or technology, and yields very little surplus. It clusters in two very different latitude bands: high-latitude zones — northern Canada, northern Eurasia, southern Chile — and low-latitude zones — the Amazon Basin, tropical Africa, northern Australia and interior Southeast Asia. A modern, market-oriented variant has emerged too: gatherers now sell processed forest plant products — tree bark for quinine and tannin extract, leaves for beverages and cosmetics, nuts for oil, tree trunks for rubber, gums and resins (chewing gum's flavourless base, "chicle," is exactly this kind of product, tapped from the zapota tree) — though synthetic substitutes have squeezed this out of most world markets.
Pastoralism emerged once hunting was recognised as unsustainable — humans domesticated animals suited to their own regional climate instead. Nomadic herding (pastoral nomadism) is the primitive, subsistence form: herders move with their livestock across a traditionally-held territory in search of pasture and water, relying on their animals for food, clothing, shelter, tools and transport — cattle across tropical Africa, sheep/goats/camels in the Sahara and Asiatic deserts, yak and llama in Tibet and the Andes, reindeer in the Arctic. Three core regions hold most of the world's pastoral nomads: the belt from North Africa's Atlantic shore across Arabia into Mongolia and Central China; the Eurasian tundra; and small pockets in south-west Africa and Madagascar. Where this movement runs vertically — between mountain summer pastures and valley/plain winter bases — it is called transhumance; in the Himalaya, the Gujjars, Bakarwals, Gaddis and Bhotiyas practise exactly this seasonal migration. Political-boundary hardening and new settlement schemes have steadily shrunk both the number of pastoral nomads and the territory they range over.
Commercial livestock rearing is nomadic herding's organised, capital-intensive opposite — practised on permanent, fenced ranches whose parcels are grazed and rotated strictly by carrying capacity, specialising in a single animal type (sheep, cattle, goats, horses) with scientific breeding, disease control and veterinary care, and its meat/wool/hide output processed and exported worldwide. New Zealand, Australia, Argentina, Uruguay and the USA are its leading countries.
Mining — History, Profitability Factors & the Two Methods
Mining is the last of the six primary activities, and humanity's use of minerals is old enough to name entire historical epochs after it — the copper age, bronze age and iron age all mark stages where a particular mineral defined the technology of the time. Early mineral use stayed confined to tools, utensils and weapons; mining only became a genuine industry with the industrial revolution, after which its economic importance has grown continuously. A mining operation's profitability rests on two factors working together: physical factors — a deposit's size, ore grade and the actual mode in which it occurs — and economic factors — market demand for the mineral, the technology available to extract it, the capital needed to build infrastructure, and labour and transport costs.
Depending on how deep a deposit lies, mining follows one of two contrasting methods. Surface (open-cast) mining extracts minerals occurring close to the surface — it is the cheapest and easiest method, keeps safety and equipment overheads relatively low, and yields output that is both large and rapid. Underground (shaft) mining is needed once the ore lies deep below the surface: vertical shafts are sunk, with underground galleries radiating outward to reach the mineral, which specially designed lifts, drills and haulage vehicles then bring to the surface, alongside a ventilation system for worker safety. It is a genuinely riskier method than open-cast mining — poisonous gases, fires, flooding and cave-ins have caused real fatal accidents in underground mines, including in India's own coal-mining history.
World Farming Systems — Subsistence, Plantation & Commercial
A slash-and-burn plot in Nagaland and a fenced wheat estate on the Canadian Prairies are both, technically, "farming" — and almost nothing else about them is the same.
Subsistence Agriculture — Primitive & Intensive
Primitive subsistence agriculture, better known as shifting cultivation or slash-and-burn agriculture, is practised by tribal communities across the tropics — Africa, South and Central America, Southeast Asia. Vegetation is burned so its ash fertilises the soil; cultivation uses only primitive tools (sticks, hoes) on small forest patches; after 3–5 years the soil exhausts and the farmer shifts to a new patch, sometimes returning to the old one years later. Its single biggest problem is that population pressure keeps shrinking this "jhum cycle," giving cleared patches less and less time to recover fertility before they're farmed again. It carries different local names worldwide: Jhumming in India's north-eastern states, Milpa in Central America and Mexico, and Ladang in Indonesia and Malaysia.
Intensive subsistence agriculture dominates densely populated monsoon Asia and comes in two forms. Where wet paddy dominates, tiny land holdings (driven by population density) are farmed almost entirely by family/manual labour with farmyard manure for fertility — yield per unit area is high, but yield per labourer stays low precisely because so many hands work such small plots. Where relief, climate or soil rule out paddy, farmers grow other crops instead — wheat, soyabean, barley and sorghum across northern China, Manchuria, North Korea and North Japan; in India, wheat across the western Indo-Gangetic plains and millets across the dry tracts of western and southern India — under broadly the same intensive, often irrigation-assisted regime.
Commercial & Plantation Farming Systems
Plantation agriculture was a European colonial import into the tropics — profit-driven, large-scale, single-crop estates run on heavy capital, managerial/technical expertise, cheap labour and transport links straight to processing plants and export markets. Its signature crops are tea, coffee, cocoa, rubber, cotton, oil palm, sugarcane, bananas and pineapples: the French built cocoa and coffee plantations in West Africa, the British planted tea across India and Sri Lanka and rubber across Malaysia, the Spanish and Americans invested in Philippine coconut and sugarcane, the Dutch once monopolised Indonesian sugarcane, and Brazil's coffee "fazendas" were long run by European planters. Ownership of most plantations has since passed to national governments or citizens of the countries where they sit.
Extensive commercial grain cultivation occupies the semi-arid mid-latitude interiors — the Eurasian steppes, Canadian and American Prairies, Argentina's Pampas, South Africa's Velds, Australia's Downs, New Zealand's Canterbury Plains. Wheat is the principal crop (alongside corn, barley, oats, rye) on farms so large that ploughing through harvesting is fully mechanised — the resulting paradox is low yield per acre but high yield per person, the exact inverse of intensive subsistence farming.
Mixed farming, typical of the developed world's temperate zones (north-west Europe, eastern North America, temperate parts of the southern hemisphere), gives roughly equal weight to crops (wheat, barley, oats, rye, fodder, root crops) and livestock (cattle, sheep, pigs, poultry) on moderate-sized, capital- and labour-intensive farms, using crop rotation and intercropping to sustain soil fertility year-round with no off-season. Dairy farming — the most advanced, capital-intensive form of livestock rearing, built on breeding, veterinary care and refrigerated transport — concentrates near urban/industrial markets in three world belts: north-west Europe (the largest), Canada, and south-east Australia/New Zealand/Tasmania.
Mediterranean agriculture is a highly specialised commercial system found on both shores of the Mediterranean and in similar climates — California, central Chile, south-west South Africa, southern Australia — prized for citrus fruit and viticulture (wine grapes, raisins, currants), plus olives and figs; its edge is supplying fresh fruit and vegetables to European/North American markets precisely in winter, when local supply is thin. Market gardening and horticulture put small, urban-adjacent farms to work growing high-value vegetables, fruit and flowers (the Netherlands' tulip trade is the classic case); when farms specialise purely in vegetables timed to an overnight truck delivery, it's called truck farming; intensive stall-based poultry/cattle rearing on manufactured feed is factory farming. Farm organisation varies too — co-operative farming (individual farms stay intact; farmers voluntarily pool resources for inputs, sales and processing — most successful in Denmark, also strong in the Netherlands, Belgium, Sweden and Italy) versus collective farming (the Soviet "Kolkhoz" model — land, livestock and labour pooled under social ownership, with farmers retaining only small personal plots).
Land Use, Cropping Seasons & Types of Farming in India
Only about 45% of India's reporting area is under crops in any given year — the other 55% tells a quieter story of forests, fallow land, and categories the revenue records have carried since colonial times.
The Nine-Fold Land-Use Classification & Common Property Resources
India's Land Revenue Records classify every reported hectare into nine categories: Forests (note: the area classified as forest is not the same as actual forest cover — a genuinely important distinction); Barren and Wastelands; Land under Non-agricultural Uses (settlements, roads, industry); Permanent Pastures and Grazing Lands; Land under Miscellaneous Tree Crops and Groves (excluded from Net Sown Area); Culturable Wasteland (left fallow for more than five years); Current Fallow (uncultivated for a year or less — a deliberate soil-rest practice); Fallow Other than Current Fallow (left idle for one to five years); and finally Net Area Sown. Adding net sown area to all fallow categories and culturable wasteland gives the total stock of cultivable land — which has, in fact, marginally declined as a share of India's reporting area over the decades.
Between 1950–51 and 2014–15, four categories rose — forests (afforestation drives and reclassification), non-agricultural use (urbanisation and industrial growth), current fallow, and Net Area Sown itself — while four others fell: barren/unculturable wasteland, culturable wasteland, pastures/grazing land, and fallow-other-than-current, as land-hungry population growth pushed marginal land into cultivation and multiple cropping intensified. Land, by ownership, splits into private land and Common Property Resources (CPRs) — state-owned land meant for community use, supplying fodder, fuel and minor forest produce (fruits, nuts, fibre, medicinal plants). CPRs matter disproportionately for the landless and marginal farmers, and for women specifically, who depend on them where private landholding is thin or absent.
With little scope left to expand net sown area, India instead needs land-saving technology — either raising per-unit-area yield of a given crop, or raising total output per unit area across all crops grown in a year by lifting cropping intensity, calculated as Cropping Intensity (%) = (Gross Cropped Area ÷ Net Sown Area) × 100. For a country that is land-scarce but labour-abundant, raising cropping intensity is doubly valuable — it lifts output from the same land and raises rural labour demand at once.
Cropping Seasons & Types of Farming
Northern and interior India runs on three distinct cropping seasons, while southern India — warm enough year-round to grow tropical crops in any season given adequate soil moisture, sometimes squeezing in three rice crops a year — doesn't observe this three-way split at all.

Farming is also classed by moisture source: irrigated farming may be protective (irrigation merely supplements rainfall to guard against moisture deficiency, spreading water thin across the maximum possible area) or productive (irrigation is the primary water input, applied heavily to maximise yield); rainfed (barani) farming splits further into dryland farming — under 75 cm of annual rainfall, hardy drought-resistant crops like ragi, bajra, moong, gram and guar, paired with soil-moisture conservation — and wetland farming, where rainfall exceeds crop moisture needs, growing water-hungry crops like rice, jute and sugarcane (and even practising aquaculture), at the cost of real flood and soil-erosion risk.
India's Foodgrains — Cereals & Pulses
Two-thirds of everything grown across India's cropped area is a foodgrain — and inside that enormous share, a single crop alone accounts for more than a quarter of it.
Cereals — Rice, Wheat & the Coarse Grains
Foodgrains occupy roughly two-thirds of India's total cropped area and dominate every region regardless of whether its farming is subsistence or commercial. They split into cereals — fine grains (rice, wheat) and coarse grains (jowar, bajra, maize, ragi), together about 54% of cropped area, with India producing roughly 11% of the world's cereals (ranked third, after China and the USA) — and pulses.
Rice is India's staple, a tropical-humid crop with some 3,000 varieties grown from sea level to 2,000 m altitude, from humid eastern India to irrigated, dry Punjab/Haryana/western UP/northern Rajasthan. Southern states and West Bengal (where farmers grow three crops — aus, aman and boro) manage two to three rice harvests a year; in the Himalaya and north-west it's strictly a monsoon-season kharif crop. India accounts for roughly 22% of world rice production, second only to China — and, tellingly, top rice yields now come from Punjab, Haryana, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, West Bengal and Kerala. Punjab and Haryana are genuinely not traditional rice regions at all — irrigated rice cultivation only arrived there in the 1970s, riding the Green Revolution's genetically improved seed, heavy fertiliser/pesticide use, and the crop's lower pest susceptibility in a dry climate.
Wheat, the second most important cereal, is a temperate, rabi-season crop grown under assured irrigation across roughly 85% of its area — concentrated in the Indo-Gangetic Plain, the Malwa Plateau and the Himalaya up to 2,700 m (rainfed only in Himalayan highlands and parts of the Malwa Plateau). Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Punjab, Haryana and Rajasthan lead production, with yields exceeding 4,000 kg/ha in Punjab and Haryana specifically.
The coarse cereals together cover about 16.5% of cropped area. Jowar (sorghum) alone takes 5.3% — a semi-arid staple of central and southern India, with Maharashtra alone producing over half the national output; it's grown in both seasons in the south but purely as a kharif fodder crop in the north. Bajra (5.2%) is a hardy, drought-resistant crop of India's hot, dry north-west and west (Maharashtra, Gujarat, UP, Rajasthan, Haryana), with yields rising in Haryana and Gujarat as drought-resistant varieties and irrigation both spread. Maize (3.6%), a dual food-and-fodder crop of semi-arid tracts and poorer soils, is grown almost everywhere except Punjab and the north-east, with its highest yields in the southern states.
Pulses — India's Protein Backbone
Pulses are legume crops — India's leading vegetarian protein source — that naturally fix atmospheric nitrogen, enriching the very soil they're grown in, a genuine agronomic advantage that also happens to be central to the exact 2017 Mains question this article is built to answer. They occupy about 11% of cropped area, are heavily rainfed (mostly across the drylands of the Deccan, central plateaus and India's north-west), and consequently carry low, year-to-year fluctuating yields.
Gram is a subtropical rabi crop of central, western and north-western India needing barely one or two light showers to succeed — yet it has been genuinely displaced by wheat in Haryana, Punjab and northern Rajasthan following the Green Revolution, and now covers only about 2.8% of cropped area; Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana and Rajasthan remain its main producers, with low and fluctuating yield even where irrigated. Tur (arhar/red gram/pigeon pea), the second most important pulse, is grown on marginal, rainfed land across central and southern India — Maharashtra alone contributes roughly a third of national output — covering just about 2% of cropped area with very low, inconsistent yield.
Current status (verified): India remains, by a wide margin, the world's largest producer and consumer of pulses — about 28% of global pulses production and 38% of the world's pulses-growing area, totalling 256.83 lakh tonnes in 2024–25. Madhya Pradesh has since overtaken the older leaders to become the single largest pulses-producing state (over 30% of national output, strong in both gram and tur), followed by Maharashtra and Rajasthan — refining, not contradicting, the states named above.
India's Cash Crops — Oilseeds, Fibres, Sugarcane, Tea & Coffee
The British planted tea gardens in an almost unbroken belt across the Shivaliks and Lesser Himalaya, from Assam all the way to Himachal Pradesh — yet today, world fame settled on only a sliver of that belt.
Oilseeds & Fibre Crops
Oilseeds, grown for edible-oil extraction across the drylands of the Malwa Plateau, Marathwada, Gujarat, Rajasthan, Telangana, Rayalseema and the Karnataka plateau, cover about 14% of cropped area between four main crops. Groundnut is largely a rainfed kharif crop (rabi too in the south) contributing nearly 19% of world production, led by Gujarat, Rajasthan, Tamil Nadu, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka and Maharashtra. Rapeseed and mustard (rai, sarson, toria, taramira) are frost-sensitive subtropical rabi crops of the north-west and centre, roughly two-thirds irrigated, led by Rajasthan (about a third of production), Haryana and Madhya Pradesh. Soyabean is concentrated almost entirely (about 90%) in Madhya Pradesh and Maharashtra, while sunflower centres on Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana and Maharashtra, with a smaller but higher-yielding irrigated presence in the north.
Among fibre crops, cotton is a tropical, semi-arid kharif crop needing a clear sky at flowering — India lost significant cotton acreage to Pakistan at Partition, but has since expanded to become the world's second-largest producer after China, across three belts (Punjab/Haryana/northern Rajasthan; Gujarat/Maharashtra; the Andhra Pradesh/Karnataka/Tamil Nadu plateaus), with far higher irrigated yields in the north-west than in rainfed Maharashtra. Jute, used for coarse cloth, bags and sacking, is concentrated overwhelmingly in West Bengal (about three-quarters of national output, itself part of India's roughly three-fifths share of world production) — Partition cost India large jute-growing tracts that went to East Pakistan (Bangladesh), and jute remains a highly localised crop, at just 0.5% of cropped area, grown otherwise only in Bihar and Assam.
Sugarcane, Tea & Coffee — India's Signature Plantation & Cash Crops
Sugarcane is naturally a rainfed, sub-humid-to-humid tropical crop, but is grown almost entirely under irrigation in India — concentrated in Uttar Pradesh (roughly two-fifths of national output) in the Indo-Gangetic belt, Maharashtra and Gujarat in the west, and irrigated tracts of Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Telangana and Andhra Pradesh in the south, where yields run highest. India is the world's second-largest producer after Brazil, at nearly 20% of global output, yet sugarcane occupies barely 2.4% of cropped area — an intensively grown, high-value crop on a genuinely small footprint.
Tea is a plantation beverage crop — black tea from fermented leaves, green tea unfermented, both rich in caffeine and tannin — native to the hills of northern China, needing undulating terrain, well-drained soil and a humid-to-sub-humid tropical/subtropical climate. Indian tea plantation began in the 1840s in Assam's Brahmaputra Valley, which still leads the country (about 53% of India's tea area, over half its production), before spreading to the sub-Himalayan tracts of West Bengal (Darjeeling, Jalpaiguri, Cooch Behar) and the Nilgiri and Cardamom hills of the Western Ghats. India supplies about 21% of world tea production and ranks as the world's second-largest tea exporter, even though its share of the international market has genuinely eroded over time.
This is exactly the puzzle behind the real 2014 Mains question anchoring this section: British planters extended tea gardens in a near-continuous belt along the Shivaliks and Lesser Himalaya from Assam to Himachal Pradesh, yet outside Assam, commercial success concentrated almost entirely around Darjeeling. Tea demands a narrow, specific combination — well-drained slopes where roots never waterlog, cool but frost-free and consistently humid air, rainfall spread evenly across the growing season rather than bunched, and slightly acidic soil. Darjeeling's particular altitude band, its exposure to reliable orographic rainfall, and its soil chemistry matched this combination unusually well; the drier, more frost-prone, less consistently humid stretches of the same belt further west — through Uttarakhand and Himachal Pradesh — simply couldn't sustain commercially viable yields at scale, so plantations tried there stayed marginal or failed even though the same colonial planters attempted them.
Coffee, a tropical plantation crop whose roasted, ground seeds make the beverage, comes in three varieties — arabica, robusta, liberica — of which India grows mainly the premium, internationally sought arabica. India contributes only about 3% of world production, ranking eighth (behind Brazil, Vietnam, Indonesia, Colombia, Honduras, Ethiopia and Peru), grown almost entirely in the Western Ghats highlands of Karnataka, Kerala and Tamil Nadu — Karnataka alone accounting for over two-thirds of the national crop.
Agricultural Development, the Green Revolution & Beyond
In the mid-1960s, two consecutive droughts forced India to import foodgrains just to feed itself. Sixty years on, it now exports more food than it imports — though by a narrower margin than the headline suggests.
From Subsistence to the Green Revolution
Pre-Independence Indian agriculture was largely subsistence-level, battered by severe droughts and famines in the first half of the twentieth century — and Partition itself cost independent India roughly a third of undivided India's irrigated land, immediately shrinking its irrigated share. The new government's initial three-pronged strategy — (i) switching land from cash crops back to food crops, (ii) intensifying cropping on already-cultivated land, and (iii) expanding cultivated area by ploughing up cultivable and fallow land — worked at first, but foodgrain production stagnated by the late 1950s. The Intensive Agricultural District Programme (IADP) and Intensive Agricultural Area Programme (IAAP) were launched to fix this, but two consecutive droughts in the mid-1960s still triggered a genuine national food crisis, forcing India to import foodgrains from abroad.
Relief arrived through high-yielding varieties (HYVs) of Mexican wheat and Philippine rice, available by the mid-1960s. India paired these with chemical fertilisers as a "package technology," rolled out across the irrigated areas of Punjab, Haryana, western Uttar Pradesh, Andhra Pradesh and Gujarat — assured soil moisture through irrigation was the one non-negotiable precondition for the whole strategy to work. The resulting Green Revolution delivered an immediate, fast rise in foodgrain output, made India self-reliant in foodgrains for the first time, and spun off entire agro-input, agro-processing and small-scale industrial sectors.
But the Green Revolution's initial reach was narrow by design: confined to irrigated land, it created sharp regional disparity, effectively bypassing the fertile, water-rich eastern region — Bihar, West Bengal, eastern Uttar Pradesh, Assam, Odisha — well into the 1970s. This is precisely the real 2014 Mains question this section answers: the east had no shortage of fertile soil or available water, but it lacked the assured, controlled irrigation infrastructure (canals, tubewells) the package technology actually depended on, alongside smaller and more fragmented landholdings that made capital-intensive HYV adoption genuinely harder, and comparatively weaker institutional credit and rural infrastructure reach at the time. Only after the 1970s did the technology diffuse meaningfully into eastern and central India.
Current status (verified): that eastward diffusion is now an active government mission in its own right — Bringing Green Revolution to Eastern India (BGREI), a Rashtriya Krishi Vikas Yojana sub-scheme launched in 2010–11, running across seven states (Assam, Bihar, Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, Odisha, eastern Uttar Pradesh, West Bengal) to target rice-based cropping-system productivity specifically. The verified result: these seven states' combined rice production rose from 45.65 million tonnes (2009–10) to 57.18 million tonnes (2017–18) — a real, measurable continuation of the very eastward spread the 2014 question is about. The 1980s brought the Planning Commission's agro-climatic planning (from 1988) for regionally balanced development and diversification into dairying, poultry, horticulture and aquaculture; the 1990s added liberalisation and a free-market reorientation of agricultural policy.
From Food Importer to Food Exporter — India's Trade Turnaround
India's exact path from a net food importer in the 1960s — the same food-crisis years covered above — to a net food exporter today is the real 2023 Mains question this section addresses directly. The reasons trace straight back through this article: Green-Revolution-driven foodgrain self-sufficiency, the steady expansion of irrigation and modern-input diffusion, the 1980s–90s diversification and liberalisation described above, a stabilising Minimum Support Price and procurement architecture that built reliable surplus, and export-oriented policy since liberalisation.
Current status (verified): India's agricultural and allied exports reached US$51.91 billion in FY2024–25, up from $48.76 billion the year before, and India remains a net agricultural exporter — but that surplus has genuinely narrowed, from $10.6 billion to $8.2 billion across the same nine-month window year-on-year, because imports (led by edible oils, pushed up by post-Ukraine-war global prices, and pulses, in years of weaker domestic output) have grown faster than exports. India's own share of world foodgrain export value has still more than doubled, from 3.38% (2010) to 7.79% (2022). The honest picture: the importer-to-exporter transformation is real and structural, but its margin is under active pressure today, not a permanently widening gulf.
Persistent Problems Facing Indian Agriculture
Only about 33% of India's cultivated area is irrigated; the rest depends directly on a monsoon that is itself unreliable — a poor south-west monsoon also cuts canal-water supply, drought-prone regions like Rajasthan receive meagre and erratic rainfall, and even high-rainfall areas see damaging year-to-year swings, so droughts and floods act as twin, not opposite, hazards (the 2006 and 2017 flash floods across the Maharashtra-Gujarat-Rajasthan drylands are a real instance of both risks striking the same region). India's per-hectare yields for rice, wheat, cotton and oilseeds still trail the USA, Russia and Japan, and labour productivity is low too, given the sheer population pressure on limited land — rainfed drylands growing coarse cereals, pulses and oilseeds suffer worst.
Modern inputs are expensive, and marginal/small farmers with little or no savings fall back on institutional credit or moneylenders — crop failure and low returns then trap many in indebtedness, a documented factor behind farmer distress and suicides in several states. Colonial-era revenue systems (Mahalwari, Ryotwari, and the especially exploitative Zamindari) left land unequally distributed, and post-Independence land reforms were never fully implemented — state governments largely avoided politically costly action against landlord interests — so inequitable land distribution persists today. Average holding size keeps shrinking under population pressure, and fragmentation continues generation to generation in states where consolidation has never been carried out even once.
Most small and marginal farmers still grow only for self-consumption, so commercialisation remains concentrated in the better-irrigated tracts; unirrigated regions see genuine seasonal underemployment of four to eight months, since agricultural work simply isn't labour-intensive year-round. Land degradation compounds all of this — irrigation-driven waterlogging, salinisation and alkalisation are especially severe in irrigated tracts, excessive pesticide/insecticide use leaves toxic residue in the soil, and — tying directly back to this article's own pulses section — nitrogen-fixing leguminous crops have themselves been displaced from many irrigated cropping patterns, undercutting exactly the natural soil-fertility mechanism pulses provide; rainfed humid and semi-arid tropical areas separately suffer human-induced wind and water erosion.
Beyond Crop Farming — The Blue Revolution & Non-Farm Primary Activities
The Blue Revolution — the real subject of the 2018 Mains question anchoring this final section — is the concept of a rapid, Green-Revolution-style rise in fish and marine-product output, launched during the Seventh Five Year Plan through the Centre-sponsored Fish Farmers Development Agency (FFDA) for integrated fisheries development and fisherfolk welfare. Its genuine, on-the-ground problems were an unreliable database on aquatic/fisheries resources, weak policy and enforcement over seed/feed quality, water pollution, unscientific aquaculture management, over-exploitation of coastal fisheries, and inefficiencies in harvest and post-harvest handling.
Current status (verified): the Blue Revolution's living institutional successor is the Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana (PMMSY), running through FY2025–26, which has driven India's annual fish production to a record high of around 195 lakh tonnes and created roughly 58 lakh livelihoods over its first five years — a genuine, ongoing continuation of the original Blue Revolution mandate, not a closed historical episode.
Finally, non-farm primary activities — the real subject of the 2025 Mains question closing this article — are simply the primary-activity family this piece opened with, minus crop agriculture itself: animal rearing/pastoralism, fishing, forestry, and mining and quarrying. Their link to India's physiography is direct and place-specific: India's long coastline and its deltaic, river-fed geography (the Gangetic delta above all) sustain both marine and inland fishing; terrain unsuited to intensive cropping — Himalayan slopes, the arid margins of the Thar — sustains transhumant pastoralism of exactly the kind practised by the Gujjars, Bakarwals, Gaddis and Bhotiyas described earlier; and India's mineral-rich plateau geology, above all the Chota Nagpur Plateau spanning Jharkhand, Odisha, West Bengal and Chhattisgarh, concentrates coal, iron ore, mica and bauxite mining precisely where crop farming is physiographically weakest — making mining and cultivation complementary land uses across India's plateau interior rather than competitors for the same soil.
