Diversity & the Need for Naming

The living world holds an astonishing variety of organisms — between 1.7 and 1.8 million species are known and described, and more are found every year. With that many organisms, local names create chaos, so biologists standardise naming.

  • Nomenclature is the standardised naming of an organism so it is known by the same name worldwide.

  • Identification is correctly determining which organism a given name belongs to.

  • Plant names follow the ICBN (International Code for Botanical Nomenclature); animal names follow the ICZN (International Code of Zoological Nomenclature).

Binomial Nomenclature & Its Rules

Binomial nomenclature, given by Carolus Linnaeus, gives every organism a two-word scientific name: a generic name (genus) + a specific epithet (species). Mango is Mangifera indicaMangifera is the genus, indica the specific epithet.

The universal rules (NEET asks these exactly)

  • Names are in Latin (or Latinised) and written in italics; when handwritten, each word is separately underlined.

  • The genus name starts with a capital letter; the specific epithet starts with a small letter — e.g. Mangifera indica, Homo sapiens.

  • The author's name (abbreviated) comes after the epithet — e.g. Mangifera indica Linn. means Linnaeus first described it.

Exam trap: only the genus is capitalised — never the species epithet, even if it's derived from a place or person. And the two words are underlined separately, not as one.

Taxonomy & Systematics

Sorting organisms into groups is classification; the groups themselves are taxa (singular: taxon) — and a taxon can sit at any level, from "animals" down to "dogs".

  • Taxonomy is the process of classifying organisms into taxa, based on characterisation, identification, classification and nomenclature.

  • Systematics (from Latin systema) studies the diversity of organisms and their evolutionary relationships. Linnaeus titled his work Systema Naturae.

Taxonomic Categories & the Hierarchy

Classification is a hierarchy of ranks. From lowest to highest: Species → Genus → Family → Order → Class → Phylum (Division in plants) → Kingdom. As you go up, the number of shared characters decreases and the number of organisms increases. Taxonomic categories are distinct biological entities, not merely convenient morphological groupings — each rank reflects real evolutionary relationship, not just "looks similar."

  • Species — the lowest category; a group of individual organisms with fundamental similarities (e.g. Panthera leo, the lion). A single genus can have more than one species: Solanum includes tuberosum (potato), melongena (brinjal) and nigrum — all different species, sharing morphological similarities, in the same genus.

  • Genus — an aggregate of closely related species with more characters in common than with species of other genera (Panthera: lion leo, tiger tigris, leopard pardus — differs from the genus Felis, which includes cats).

  • Family — related genera, grouped on both vegetative and reproductive features (Felidae = Panthera + Felis; Solanaceae = Solanum, Petunia, Datura).

  • Order — related families, based on aggregates of characters (Carnivora = Felidae + Canidae; plant families Convolvulaceae and Solanaceae are both placed in order Polymoniales, mainly on floral characters).

  • Class — related orders (Mammalia = Primata + Carnivora).

  • Phylum (animals) / Division (plants) — related classes (Chordata: notochord + dorsal hollow neural system).

  • Kingdom — the highest category (Animalia, Plantae).

The rule that ties it together: as you climb from species to kingdom, the number of common characteristics DECREASES while the number of organisms included increases — and the difficulty of determining relationships at the same level increases, making classification progressively more complex.

Why this matters for NEET

  • Direct recall marks: who gave binomial nomenclature (Linnaeus), the capitalisation rule, ICBN vs ICZN, and "arrange these taxa from lowest to highest".

  • Hierarchy questions: "as we go higher, common characters increase or decrease?" (decrease); which is the smallest/largest category (species/kingdom).

  • Trap: Division is the plant equivalent of an animal Phylum — don't write Phylum for a plant.
