What a Volcano Is — Magma, Lava & Eruption Types

Volcanoes are a Prelims regular (the 2024 paper asked the products of eruptions and a statement-set on volcano types) and a Mains favourite via the Deccan Traps and global eruptions. Know the eruption types, the volcano forms, the intrusive landforms and the Indian links cold.

A volcano is the Earth turning itself inside out — a vent through which molten rock, gas and ash from deep below burst onto the surface. The same process that destroys cities also builds islands, lays down the world's most fertile soils, and created India's Deccan Plateau. Here is how volcanoes work, the shapes they make above and below ground, and where they occur.

What a volcano is — magma, lava and eruption types

  • A volcano is an opening where gases, ash and/or molten rock escape to the surface. Molten rock below ground is magma (stored in a magma chamber); once it reaches the surface through a vent and crater, it is called lava. A volcano is active if it is erupting or has erupted recently.

  • The style of eruption depends on the lava. Thin, fluid basaltic lava (low silica) lets gas escape easily, giving gentle, effusive (quiet) eruptions. Thick, viscous lava (high silica) traps gas until it bursts free, giving violent, explosive eruptions.

  • The products of an eruption include lava flows, pyroclastic debris (shattered rock), volcanic bombs, ash and dust, and gases — chiefly water vapour, carbon dioxide, and sulphur and nitrogen compounds (this list was the basis of a 2024 Prelims question).

  • Eruptions are graded by violence. From gentlest to most explosive, the classic styles are Hawaiian (quiet basalt fountains) → StrombolianVulcanianPlinian/Vesuvian (towering ash columns) → Pelean (deadly glowing pyroclastic clouds). Scientists rank an eruption's size on the Volcanic Explosivity Index (VEI), a 0–8 scale based on the volume of material ejected — much as the Richter scale ranks earthquakes.

Volcanoes are first classified by how alive they are — and India has a famous example.

  • Active — currently erupting or with recent eruptions (e.g. Mt Etna, Kilauea); Dormant ("sleeping") — quiet now but capable of erupting again (e.g. Mt Fuji); Extinct (dead) — no eruption in historical time and unlikely to again (e.g. Deccan's vents, Mt Kilimanjaro).

  • Barren Island in the Andaman Sea is the only active volcano in India (and South Asia), lying on the subduction zone east of the Andaman arc; it has erupted repeatedly since 1991. Nearby Narcondam is considered dormant. (Barren Island is a frequent Prelims map/fact target.)

By their shape and eruption style, volcanoes fall into a few classic types — from gentle giants to caldera-forming monsters.

  • Note the contrast UPSC loves: shield volcanoes are the largest (fluid lava spreads wide and low), while composite volcanoes are the most picturesque and dangerous, and calderas are the most explosive of all.

Volcanic Landforms — Extrusive and Intrusive

Magma that reaches the surface makes extrusive landforms; magma that cools within the crust makes intrusive landforms, exposed later by erosion. India's Deccan shows both.

  • Extrusive (on the surface): vast lava plateaus from flood basalts (the Deccan Trap covering much of Maharashtra), volcanic cones, and craters/calderas.

  • Batholith — a huge granitic mass that cools deep in the crust, exposed only after erosion strips the cover (forms the cores of many mountains; granite domes of the Karnataka plateau).

  • Laccolith — a large dome-shaped intrusion with a flat base, fed by a pipe from below (like a buried composite volcano). Lapolith — a saucer-shaped (concave-up) intrusion. Phacolith — a wavy intrusion at the crest of an anticline or base of a syncline.

  • Sill / Sheet — a horizontal intrusion (thick = sill, thin = sheet). Dyke — a vertical wall-like intrusion that cuts across the rock; the dykes of western Maharashtra were the feeders that fed the Deccan Trap eruptions.

Distribution, Hazards and Benefits

Like earthquakes, volcanoes are concentrated along plate boundaries — and although they kill, they also enrich.

  • Where they occur: most volcanoes lie along the Pacific Ring of Fire (subduction/convergent zones), along mid-oceanic ridges (divergent zones), and at intra-plate hotspots over mantle plumes (Hawaii; the Réunion plume behind the Deccan Traps).

  • Hazards: lava flows; fast, lethal pyroclastic flows (super-hot gas + ash); lahars (volcanic mudflows); ashfall that collapses roofs and grounds aircraft; toxic gases; and climate cooling — the 1991 Mt Pinatubo eruption cooled global temperatures by about 0.5°C for a year.

  • Benefits: weathered basalt gives the fertile black "regur" soil of the Deccan (ideal for cotton); volcanic regions offer geothermal energy (India's hot springs at Puga and Chumathang in Ladakh, Tattapani in Chhattisgarh, Manikaran in Himachal); valuable minerals (sulphur, copper, and gemstones in old volcanic rock); fertile volcanic islands; and tourism. This is why people keep living near volcanoes.

  • Volcanoes and climate: a big eruption injects sulphur-dioxide aerosols into the stratosphere, which reflect sunlight and cool the planet for a year or two — Pinatubo (1991) and, historically, Tambora (1815, the "Year Without a Summer"). The same eruptions monitored today feed disaster-warning systems and aviation ash advisories.
