Two rivers can look identical on a map and still have completely different life stories — one carved by ice and snowmelt over millions of years, the other simply following the ancient, settled slope of a plateau that has barely moved since the dinosaurs.

Drainage Basics & Classification

  • Drainage is the flow of water through well-defined channels; a drainage system is the network of such channels. The area drained by a single river is its catchment area; the area drained by a river and all its tributaries is its drainage basin, bounded by a watershed (the same concept at a larger scale is simply called a river basin). Four classic drainage patterns recur across India: dendritic (tree-branch-like, as in the northern plains), radial (rivers spreading outward from a central hill, as from the Amarkantak range), trellis (parallel primary tributaries with secondary ones joining at right angles), and centripetal (rivers converging into a lake or depression).

  • By where they discharge, India's rivers split into Bay of Bengal drainage (about 77% of the area — the Ganga, Brahmaputra, Mahanadi, Krishna and others) and Arabian Sea drainage (about 23% — the Indus, Narmada, Tapi, Mahi and Periyar), separated by the Delhi ridge, the Aravalis and the Sahyadris. By catchment size, basins split into major (over 20,000 sq. km — 14 basins, including the Ganga, Brahmaputra, Krishna, Tapi and Narmada), medium (2,000-20,000 sq. km — 44 basins) and minor (under 2,000 sq. km). But the most commonly used scheme — the one this article follows — classifies by origin: Himalayan drainage versus Peninsular drainage, even though this creates one genuine anomaly: rivers like the Chambal, Betwa and Son are geologically much older than most Himalayan-origin rivers, yet get grouped as part of the Himalayan (Ganga) system by where they join.

The Evolution of the Himalayan Drainage

A single, mighty river may once have run the entire length of the Himalayas — until the mountains themselves tore it apart.

  • Geologists believe a colossal river — the "Shiwalik" or "Indo-Brahma" — once traversed the Himalaya's entire longitudinal extent from Assam to Punjab and onward to Sind, discharging into the Gulf of Sind during the Miocene period, roughly 5-24 million years ago. The Shiwalik formation's remarkable continuity, its lacustrine origin, and its alluvial deposits of sand, silt, clay, boulders and conglomerates all support this theory.

  • Over time, Pleistocene tectonic upheaval in the western Himalayas — including the uplift of the Potwar Plateau (Delhi Ridge), which became the water divide between the Indus and Ganga systems — is believed to have dismembered this single river into three separate systems: the Indus and its tributaries in the west, the Ganga and its Himalayan tributaries in the centre, and the Brahmaputra's Assam stretch with its tributaries in the east. Separately, the down-thrusting of the Malda gap (between the Rajmahal hills and the Meghalaya plateau) during the mid-Pleistocene diverted both the Ganga and the Brahmaputra to flow toward the Bay of Bengal.

  • Current relevance (verified): this dismemberment theory has a genuinely current, cross-disciplinary piece of supporting evidence — closely related blind river dolphin populations (a Gangetic subspecies in the Ganga, an Indus subspecies in the Indus) live today in two now-completely separated river basins, a pattern best explained by these basins having once been connected, exactly as the Indo-Brahma theory proposes for a shared Yamuna-Sutlej-era drainage.

The Indus System

The Indus begins as a trickle near a mountain the Tibetans call the "Lion's Mouth" — and ends, nearly 3,000 km later, feeding one of the world's most contested canal networks.

  • The Indus (Sindhu) is one of the world's largest river basins — 11,65,000 sq. km total (3,21,289 sq. km in India) and 2,880 km long (1,114 km in India) — and the westernmost Himalayan river in India, flowing through Jammu & Kashmir alone before leaving the country. It rises near Bokhar Chu (4,164 m, Kailash range, Tibet), flows northwest between the Ladakh and Zaskar ranges, cuts a spectacular gorge near Gilgit, and enters Pakistan near Chilas. Above Mithankot it receives the Panjnad — the collective name for five Punjab rivers joining together — before discharging into the Arabian Sea east of Karachi.

    Together with the Chenab, Ravi, Beas and the Indus itself, the Satluj completes the five rivers of the Panjnad. Being antecedent — older than the mountain-building that raised the range it cuts through — is precisely why the Satluj (and the Indus itself) could carve straight across the rising Himalaya rather than being deflected by it.

The Ganga System

Follow the Ganga back to its very source and you find it doesn't even carry that name yet — just two glacier-fed streams, still hundreds of kilometres from becoming India's most important river.

  • The Ganga rises as the Bhagirathi, from the Gangotri glacier near Gaumukh (3,900 m, Uttarkashi). At Devprayag it meets the Alaknanda (rising at the Satopanth glacier above Badrinath) and only from here on is called the "Ganga." This confluence is the last of a sequence of sacred river-meeting points — the Panch Prayag — running downstream in this order: Vishnu Prayag (Dhauli Ganga meets Alaknanda), Nand Prayag, Karna Prayag (Pindar joins), Rudra Prayag (Mandakini joins), and finally Dev Prayag (Bhagirathi joins to form the Ganga proper).

  • The Ganga enters the plains at Haridwar, running 2,525 km across Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar and West Bengal (basin: ~8.6 lakh sq. km in India) before discharging into the Bay of Bengal near Sagar Island. Its major right-bank tributary is the Son; its important left-bank tributaries, running downstream, are the Ramganga, Gomati, Ghaghara, Gandak, Kosi and Mahananda — precisely the sequence UPSC has tested directly.

  • Its westernmost and longest tributary, the Yamuna, rises at the Yamunotri glacier (Banderpunch range, 6,316 m) and joins the Ganga at Prayag (Allahabad); its own right-bank tributaries — the Chambal, Sind, Betwa and Ken — all originate in the Peninsular plateau (the Chambal is famous for its eroded "badland" ravine topography). The Kosi, another antecedent river rising north of Everest in Tibet, is nicknamed the "Sorrow of Bihar" for its notoriously frequent course changes, driven by the huge sediment load it carries down from its upper reaches. Government's ongoing river-health effort here is the Namami Gange Programme (approved 2014), which pairs pollution abatement with conservation across pillars including sewerage infrastructure, river-front development and afforestation.

The Brahmaputra System

By the time it reaches India, this river has already crossed an entire plateau in a different country, under a completely different name.

  • The Brahmaputra rises at the Chemayungdung glacier (Kailash range, near Mansarovar) and flows east for nearly 1,200 km across dry, flat southern Tibet as the Tsangpo ("the purifier"). It turns turbulent only after carving a deep gorge through the Central Himalayas near Namcha Barwa (7,755 m), emerging into India — as the Siang/Dihang — west of Sadiya, Arunachal Pradesh.

  • Across its 750 km Assam-valley run it collects major tributaries including the Subansiri (itself antecedent), Kameng, Manas and Sankosh (right bank) and the Burhi Dihing and Dhansari (left bank). The Brahmaputra is genuinely known for severe floods, channel shifting and bank erosion — a direct result of the huge sediment load its tributaries carry from a very high-rainfall catchment. It enters Bangladesh near Dhubri, later merging with the Padma before reaching the Bay of Bengal.

The Peninsular Drainage System

South of the Vindhyas, India's rivers tell an almost opposite story — older, calmer, and mostly running the other way.

  • The Peninsular drainage is demonstrably older than the Himalayan system — visible in its broad, gently graded, mature valleys. Three geological events shaped it: (i) early-Tertiary subsidence and submergence of the Peninsula's western flank, which disturbed the river system's original symmetry; (ii) Himalayan-era subsidence and trough faulting along the Peninsula's northern flank, which is exactly why the Narmada and Tapi flow in rift/trough valleys, filling the original cracks with sediment rather than building deltas; and (iii) a slight northwest-to-southeast tilt of the Peninsular block, which oriented most of the rest of the drainage toward the Bay of Bengal.

  • Peninsular rivers are typically marked by a fixed course, an absence of meanders, and non-perennial flow — the Narmada and Tapi, running through rift valleys, are the clear exceptions. The Western Ghats act as the principal water divide.

The Godavari, after Rajamundri, splits into several branches to form a large delta — in sharp contrast to the Narmada and Tapi, whose rivers reach the Arabian Sea as broad estuaries instead: a direct, testable consequence of flowing through rift valleys rather than building up a river-mouth delta.
