Forest Types by Rainfall & Region

🎯 Exam priority: Important (T2). India's forest types map almost perfectly onto rainfall bands β€” learn the rainfall threshold for each type and the specific tree species become easy to place.

A single country holds evergreen rainforest tall enough to lose its canopy in cloud, thorny scrubland too dry for a leaf to survive the year, and a forest so temperate it grows at the very same latitude as the Sahara.

  • Tropical evergreen and semi-evergreen forests need over 200 cm of rain and a mean temperature above 22Β°C β€” found on the Western Ghats' western slope, the northeastern hills, and the Andaman & Nicobar Islands. Densely stratified with trees reaching 60 m or more, they stay green year-round (rosewood, mahogany, ebony); the semi-evergreen variant, in slightly drier patches, mixes evergreen and moist deciduous species (white cedar, hollock, kail).

  • Tropical deciduous (monsoon) forests are India's most widespread forest type, spanning the 70-200 cm rainfall band, and split into moist deciduous (100-200 cm β€” northeastern states, Himalayan foothills, eastern Western Ghats, Odisha; teak, sal, shisham, sandalwood) and dry deciduous (70-100 cm β€” the rainier Peninsula and the UP/Bihar plains; a parkland landscape of teak amid grass, shedding leaves completely in the dry season; tendu, palas, khair).

  • Tropical thorn forests, below 50 cm of rain, cover the semi-arid belt of southwest Punjab, Haryana, Rajasthan, Gujarat and Madhya Pradesh β€” leafless scrub for most of the year (babool, ber, khejri, neem) with tussocky grass up to 2 m.

Climb any of India's mountains and you effectively travel from the tropics to the Arctic in a single afternoon β€” the vegetation changing zone by zone as reliably as a thermometer.

  • The Himalayan (northern montane) sequence runs, with rising altitude: deciduous forest at the foothills; wet temperate forest between 1,000-2,000 m, where evergreen broadleaf oak and chestnut dominate in the northeast, West Bengal hills and Uttaranchal; Chir pine forests at 1,500-1,750 m (a valuable commercial timber); Deodar (durable construction timber) in the western Himalaya, alongside the chinar and walnut that sustain Kashmir's famous handicrafts; blue pine and spruce at 2,225-3,048 m, with temperate grasslands interspersed; and finally Alpine forests and pastures (silver fir, juniper, birch, rhododendron) between 3,000-4,000 m β€” pastures actively used for transhumance by the Gujjars, Bakarwals, Bhotiyas and Gaddis β€” giving way to tundra mosses and lichens at the very highest elevations. The wetter, south-facing Himalayan slopes carry noticeably thicker vegetation than the drier north-facing ones.

  • The southern montane forests, found in the Western Ghats, the Vindhyas and the Nilgiris, need far less altitude to turn temperate β€” being much closer to the equator, temperate vegetation appears at just ~1,500 m. These temperate forests are locally called Sholas in the Nilgiris, Anaimalai and Palani hills (magnolia, laurel, cinchona, wattle), and also occur in the Satpura and Maikal ranges.

Where land quietly gives way to water, India hides some of its richest and most fragile habitats β€” and one plant family that has learned to drink salt water and survive.

  • India's wetlands cover 3.9 million hectares (about 70% under paddy cultivation), grouped into eight categories spanning Deccan reservoirs, Rajasthan/Gujarat's saline expanses, Gangetic Plain freshwater marshes, Brahmaputra floodplains, Himalayan montane lakes, and Andaman & Nicobar mangrove wetlands. Two sites β€” Chilika Lake (Odisha) and Keoladeo National Park (Bharatpur) β€” are protected as waterfowl habitats under the international Ramsar Convention.

  • Mangroves β€” salt-tolerant plants rooted in creeks, tidal flats and estuaries β€” cover 6,740 sq. km in India, about 7% of the world's total mangrove forest area. They are most highly developed in the Andaman & Nicobar Islands and the Sunderbans (West Bengal), with further significant stretches at the Mahanadi, Godavari and Krishna deltas β€” though ongoing encroachment makes their conservation an active, unresolved concern.

The British didn't just use India's forests β€” they permanently rewired what those forests were for, from a source of subsistence to a source of revenue.

  • Colonial administration treated forests primarily as an economic resource: Garhwal and Kumaon's oak forests were deliberately replaced with pine (chir) to supply railway sleepers, land was cleared for tea, rubber and coffee plantations, and timber was prized as a heat insulator in construction β€” converting forests from a protected, subsistence resource into a commercially exploited one.

  • India's national forest policy (1952, substantially revised 1988) set out to bring 33% of the country's geographical area under forest cover, restore ecological balance, conserve biodiversity, check soil erosion and desertification, and expand forest cover through social forestry β€” split into urban forestry (green belts, parks, roadside avenues), rural forestry (agro-forestry, combining trees with crops on the same land, and community forestry on village/public land, benefiting even landless households), and farm forestry (farmers growing trees commercially on their own land, often with free state-supplied seedlings).

  • For a vast number of tribal communities, forests are not scenery but sustenance β€” a direct source of food, fruit, edible leaves, honey, building material and livelihood. This deep, practical relationship is exactly why forest policy increasingly treats tribal communities as active growers and conservation partners, drawing on generations of accumulated forestry knowledge, rather than merely as collectors of minor forest produce.

India holds nearly one in twenty of every known plant and animal species on Earth β€” a genuine natural-heritage superlative, and one now actively defended by dedicated law and dedicated projects.

  • India hosts roughly 4-5% of all known plant and animal species on Earth, but habitat loss (land clearance for agriculture, settlement, roads, mining and reservoirs), fodder/fuelwood pressure, cattle grazing, historic sport-hunting and today's commercial poaching, and forest fires have driven serious declines. The Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972 β€” significantly strengthened by a 1991 amendment β€” is India's core legal framework, protecting scheduled endangered species and giving legal standing to National Parks, Sanctuaries and closed conservation areas.

  • Project Tiger, launched in 1973, began with just 9 reserves covering 16,339 sq. km. Current status (verified): it has since grown to 53 tiger reserves across 18 states, and India's tiger population β€” once as low as roughly 1,800 nationally before the project began β€” has climbed to about 3,167 (2022 census), now representing close to 75% of the entire world's wild tiger population. Project Elephant (launched 1992, active in 16 states) runs a parallel mission for India's free-ranging wild elephant populations, alongside smaller efforts like the Crocodile Breeding Project and Project Hangul.

  • A Biosphere Reserve is a UNESCO-recognised, representative terrestrial-and-coastal ecosystem under the Man and Biosphere (MAB) Programme. India has 18 Biosphere Reserves β€” from Nilgiri (India's first, 1986) to Panna (2011) β€” of which, as of September 2025, 12 are formally recognised on UNESCO's World Network of Biosphere Reserves, most recently the Cold Desert Biosphere Reserve in Himachal Pradesh.
