What Causes Tides & How They're Classified
π― Exam priority: Important (T2). Closes out Oceanography β tides are a reliable Prelims mechanism-question source, while coral reefs and mangroves are genuine, recurring Mains territory (both were asked in the very same year, 2019).
Twice a day, without fail, the sea creeps up beaches around the world and then retreats β a rhythm so exact that sailors have set their clocks, and their voyages, by it for millennia.
What Causes Tides
A tide is the periodical rise and fall of sea level, once or twice a day, caused mainly by the gravitational attraction of the Moon and, to a lesser extent, the Sun. This is distinct from a surge β a rise driven by meteorological effects (wind, atmospheric pressure) rather than gravity, and hence irregular, unlike the predictable tide.
The Moon's gravitational pull, together with the Earth's own centrifugal force (which counterbalances gravity), together create two tidal bulges: one on the side of the Earth facing the Moon (direct gravitational pull) and one on the opposite side (where centrifugal force dominates). Tidal bulges are higher on wide continental shelves and lower at mid-oceanic islands; funnel-shaped bays and estuaries can dramatically magnify tidal range, channelling water into fast-moving tidal currents.
Types of Tides
By frequency: a semi-diurnal tide (the most common pattern) brings two high and two low tides of roughly equal height each day; a diurnal tide brings just one high and one low tide a day; a mixed tide shows variable heights between successive tides (common along North America's west coast and many Pacific islands).
By Sun-Moon-Earth position: when the Sun, Moon and Earth align (full moon or new moon), their pulls combine to produce unusually high spring tides, twice a month. About seven days later, when the Sun and Moon sit at right angles to the Earth, their pulls partly cancel, producing weaker neap tides. Tidal range is also amplified once a month when the Moon is closest to Earth (perigee) and around 3 January each year when the Earth is closest to the Sun (perihelion) β and correspondingly reduced at apogee (Moon farthest) and aphelion (Earth farthest, around 4 July).
The period from high tide to low tide (falling water) is the ebb; from low tide to high tide (rising water) is the flow or flood. The world's highest tides occur in Canada's Bay of Fundy, where the tidal bulge reaches 15-16 m.
Why Tides Matter
Because tides follow the predictable Earth-Moon-Sun geometry, they can be forecast well in advance β vital for navigators and fishermen, and especially for harbours with shallow entrance "bars" that block ships at low tide. Tides also help desilt river-mouth sediment and flush polluted water from estuaries, and are harnessed for tidal power in countries including Canada, France, Russia and China; India has its own 3 MW tidal project at Durgaduani in the Sunderbans, West Bengal.
How Coral Reefs Form
Coral reefs cover under 1% of the ocean floor β yet host more animal life, by some counts, than any other ecosystem on Earth.

A coral reef is built by colonies of tiny marine animals called coral polyps, which secrete a hard calcium-carbonate skeleton. Most reef-building corals live in a symbiotic relationship with microscopic algae called zooxanthellae, which live inside the coral's tissue: the algae photosynthesise and supply the coral with food and its characteristic colour, while the coral provides the algae shelter and nutrients.
This symbiosis is precisely why coral reefs need very specific conditions: warm water (roughly 20-30Β°C), shallow depth, high sunlight penetration, and low sediment β which is why reefs flourish around clear tropical islands but are conspicuously absent near major river mouths even at tropical latitudes (sediment-laden, turbid river water blocks the sunlight zooxanthellae need). By structure, reefs are classified as fringing reefs (growing directly off the coast), barrier reefs (separated from the coast by a lagoon, like Australia's Great Barrier Reef), and atolls (ring-shaped reefs around a lagoon, typically formed as a volcanic island subsides β as Charles Darwin first theorised). India's major reef systems lie in the Gulf of Mannar, the Lakshadweep islands, the Andaman & Nicobar Islands, and the Gulf of Kutch.

Where the land meets a tropical sea, one tree family has evolved to live in salt water most plants cannot survive β and it may be the single most effective natural buffer against a cyclone's storm surge.

Mangroves are salt-tolerant (halophytic) trees and shrubs that grow in the intertidal zone of tropical and sub-tropical coasts. They show striking adaptations to their harsh, waterlogged, saline habitat: exposed "breathing roots" called pneumatophores that poke above the mud to take in oxygen, salt-excreting leaves, and viviparous seeds that germinate while still attached to the parent tree, giving seedlings a head start before they drop into the water.
India's Sunderbans (West Bengal, at the Ganga-Brahmaputra delta) is the world's largest mangrove forest and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, home to the Bengal tiger's only mangrove-dwelling population. Other major Indian mangrove tracts include Bhitarkanika (Odisha) and Pichhavaram (Tamil Nadu).
Ecologically and economically, mangroves are outsized performers: their tangled root systems dissipate wave energy, offering coastal communities real protection against cyclones, storm surges and even tsunamis; they serve as breeding and nursery grounds for fish and prawns, underpinning coastal fisheries; and, as dense stores of "blue carbon," they sequester carbon at rates far higher per hectare than most tropical forests. Despite this, mangrove cover has been steadily lost worldwide to aquaculture-pond conversion, coastal urban development, and rising sea levels β exactly the tension UPSC's 2019 Mains question on mangrove depletion asks candidates to unpack.
Coral Bleaching & Global Warming
A reef under heat stress doesn't just fade β it starves, and the story of just how much of the world's reef area has been affected recently is a genuinely current one.

When ocean water gets too warm for too long, corals expel their zooxanthellae in a stress response β losing both their colour (hence "bleaching," as the white calcium-carbonate skeleton shows through) and their main food source. A bleached coral is not yet dead, but it is starving; if the heat stress persists, mass coral death and long-term reef collapse follow, taking down the entire ecosystem the reef supports.
Current status (verified): In April 2024, NOAA and the International Coral Reef Initiative confirmed the world's 4th Global Coral Bleaching Event β the most intense and widest ever recorded. From early 2023 to mid-2025, bleaching-level heat stress struck 84% of the world's coral reef area across all three reef-bearing ocean basins (Pacific, Atlantic, Indian), with mass bleaching confirmed in 83-plus countries and territories. The event likely ended by mid-2025, but NOAA has warned this signals a "new reality" of near-annual bleaching going forward β precisely the kind of impact UPSC's 2019 Mains question on global warming and the "coral life system" is testing candidates to assess.
