Population Distribution & Density
🎯 Exam priority: High-yield (T1). Population is a genuine perennial — tested almost every year from some angle, and one of the few topics where the CURRENT figure matters as much as the underlying concept.
Nine states hold three-quarters of India's people, while some states with fairly large territories barely register a percentage point — proof that "population distribution" is really a question about history and geography, not just headcounts.
Population Distribution & Density
India's population data comes from a decennial Census — the first held in 1872, the first COMPLETE one in 1881. Distribution is highly uneven: Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra, Bihar and West Bengal lead by raw numbers, and just nine states — UP, Maharashtra, Bihar, West Bengal, Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Karnataka and Gujarat — together hold about 76% of India's total population, while Jammu & Kashmir (1.04%), Arunachal Pradesh (0.11%) and Uttarakhand (0.84%) hold only slivers despite fairly large land areas. Physical factors (climate, terrain, water availability) explain much of this — river plains, deltas and coastal plains carry far more people than the Himalayas, interior peninsular India, or the northeast — but socio-economic and historical factors matter just as much: irrigation development (Rajasthan), mineral/energy resources (Jharkhand) and transport-network growth (Peninsular states) have all pulled population into areas that were once thinly settled.
Density (persons per sq. km) offers a sharper lens: India's density rose from 117 (1951) to 382 (2011) — more than tripling in six decades — and ranges from just 17/sq. km in Arunachal Pradesh to 11,297/sq. km in Delhi. Among northern states, Bihar (1,102), West Bengal (1,029) and UP (828) are densest; among peninsular states, Kerala (859) and Tamil Nadu (555) lead. Because crude density says little about the actual pressure of population on farmland, geographers also compute physiological density (total population ÷ net cultivated area) and agricultural density (agricultural population ÷ net cultivable area) — both far more meaningful for a country as agriculturally dependent as India.

India's population story of the last century isn't one smooth curve — it's four completely different eras stitched together, each with its own cause.

Phase I (1901-1921) was one of stagnant, even negative growth — high birth AND death rates from poor health services, illiteracy and weak food distribution, culminating in an actual population decline during 1911-1921. Phase II (1921-1951) brought steady growth as health and sanitation improved and mortality fell, even against the backdrop of the Great Depression and World War II. Phase III (1951-1981) was India's population explosion — mortality fell sharply while fertility stayed high, averaging 2.2% annual growth, fuelled by post-Independence development and some international in-migration (Tibetan, Bangladeshi, Nepali and Pakistani arrivals). Phase IV (1981-present) shows growth gradually slowing, driven by a falling crude birth rate linked to a rising age at marriage and — critically — improved female education.
Growth also varies sharply by region: Kerala recorded India's lowest 1991-2001 growth rate (9.4%), alongside Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Odisha and Goa (all under 20%), while a west-to-east belt spanning Gujarat, Maharashtra, Rajasthan, Punjab, Haryana, UP, Uttarakhand, MP, Sikkim, Assam, West Bengal, Bihar, Chhattisgarh and Jharkhand grew markedly faster (20-25%). By 2001-2011, growth had slowed almost everywhere compared to the previous decade — Maharashtra's rate fell the most (6.7 percentage points), while Tamil Nadu and Puducherry were rare exceptions that actually rose slightly.
Population Composition
A single country of over a billion people is never really "one" population — it is a mosaic of language, faith, residence and work that changes completely depending on which cross-section you take.

As of the 2011 Census, about 68.8% of Indians lived in villages (India has 640,867 villages, 93.2% inhabited) — though this varies hugely, from Bihar and Sikkim's very high rural shares to Goa and Maharashtra's roughly 50-50 split. Urban population (31.16% in 2011) is growing faster than rural, concentrated along major transport corridors and industrial belts (Kolkata, Mumbai, Bengaluru-Mysuru, Delhi-Kanpur), while agriculturally stagnant tracts of the middle/lower Ganga plain, non-irrigated western Rajasthan and remote northeastern hill areas remain far less urbanised.
Linguistically, India's languages fall into four major families — Indo-European (73% of speakers; Hindi, Punjabi, Gujarati, Bengali and more), Dravidian (20%; Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, Malayalam), Austric (1.38%; Munda and Mon-Khmer groups) and Sino-Tibetan (0.85%; concentrated in the Himalayan and northeastern belt) — with 22 officially scheduled languages today, a fraction of the 179 languages and 544 dialects Grierson's landmark Linguistic Survey of India (1903-1928) once documented.
Religiously, the 2011 Census recorded Hindus at 79.8%, Muslims (India's largest religious minority, concentrated in J&K, parts of West Bengal, Kerala, UP and around Delhi) at 14.2%, Christians at 2.3% (concentrated along the western coast and northeastern hill states), Sikhs at 1.7% (mainly Punjab, Haryana, Delhi), Buddhists at 0.7% and Jains at 0.4%.
Occupationally, India's work participation rate was just 39.8% in 2011 (leaving some 60% as non-workers), and of those working, a striking 54.6% were in the primary sector (cultivators and agricultural labourers), against only 3.8% in secondary (household industry) and 41.6% in tertiary/other work — though the primary-sector share has been gradually declining (58.2% in 2001 → 54.6% in 2011) as the economy shifts toward non-farm activity.

Current status (verified): every figure above comes from the 2011 Census, but India's demographic story has moved significantly since. In April 2023, India overtook China to become the world's most populous country — not the "second most populous" the older data still describes — and by 2026 stands at roughly 1.45 billion people, with the gap over China (whose population is now declining) continuing to widen. India's long-delayed decennial Census — originally due in 2021, postponed by COVID-19 — is finally underway in phases through 2026-2027; it will be India's first fully digital Census and the first since 1931 to collect detailed caste data.
Fertility has fallen just as dramatically: India's Total Fertility Rate — the average number of live births a woman would have by the end of her childbearing years — has dropped to 2.0 nationally (NFHS-5, 2019-21), now technically below the 2.1 "replacement level" needed to keep population size stable in the long run. Only five states — Bihar, Meghalaya, Uttar Pradesh, Jharkhand and Manipur — remain above replacement-level fertility today.
This is the essence of India's own demographic transition — its Phase IV slowdown, described above, is really the tail end of a shift from high birth/death rates toward low ones. Set against a global backdrop, some countries have moved much further along this curve into what demographers call "demographic winter" — persistently below-replacement fertility combined with population ageing and, eventually, outright decline, already visible in Japan, South Korea and, notably, China itself. India's own falling TFR means it is not entirely immune to this trajectory either, even as its still-young population structure gives it a longer runway than most.

Never quote a 2011-Census fact as if it were current — always pair the book's baseline data with today's verified figures, especially for population, where the gap has become genuinely large.
Demographic transition and demographic winter are two ends of the same spectrum, not separate topics — frame India's own falling TFR as movement along that same curve, not an isolated fact.
